What is Ubuntu? Warning, it can change your life!
This is how Google defines Ubuntu:
noun SOUTH AFRICAN
a quality that includes the essential human virtues; compassion and humanity.
"there is a need for understanding not vengeance, ubuntu not victimization"
But it is so much more..
Ubuntu is about our humanity and how we are connected, but also the inherent worth of each individual,” Mungi Ngomane
A deep-rooted African philosophy that celebrates humanity and the inherent worth of each person, those who practice Ubuntu have a quality of life that is hard to imitate.
It, in a nutshell means, I am because of what we all are - the African and more profound way of saying: “do unto others as you would have done to you”. Just think of the impact this philosophy could make if it was adopted by the world.
South Africa is well-known for it’s Apartheid Atrocities but from the ashes rised a new generation full of forgiveness and new life, Ubuntu in real time.
Ubuntu provides a positive counter to the current social way of “hatred, intolerance, abuse of human rights, dehumanization, exploitation, authoritarianism, poverty, and oppression that plague the human race at the national and international levels” quoted
Ubuntu is a way of life and is based on mutual respect, compassion, peace and treating people, different from you, with dignity. We can only grow if we grow together as one.
“There is a word in South Africa — Ubuntu — that describes (Nelson Mandela’s) greatest gift: his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that can be invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by sharing ourselves with others, and caring for those around us,” Barack Obama. Quoted
Imagine what a difference this will make in the world.
Here are 3 ways you can practice Ubuntu in your own life today:
- Be intentional in your thought process about other people - be kind towards people and be understanding if their way of life or values are different from yours.
- Always acknowledge the humanity of people around you, it is so easy to seperate another person’s feelings from a situation especially when interacting online. Be mindful of their feelings and think before you speak.
- Be conscientious about what you do, everything you do affects the world around you. In a world where you can be anything - be kind.
Cultural appropriation has such a negative connotation, but we think Ubuntu is a philosophy we should all appropropriate, for a better society for us all!
